Equipment
Stereo Microscope
It is the main instrument of scientific - under magnification - observation of graphic indications on documents, in order to determine the type of graphic medium and the special graphic characteristics that prove its authenticity or forgery (suggested magnification 7X-30X)
Video Spectral Comparator (VSC [foster + freeman, UK])
This scientific device is absolutely necessary when it comes to detecting the chromatic variation of handwritten ink marks, general alterations or additions.
The device operates taking advantage of the properties of materials (inks) in terms of how they react to the effect of light (UV, Visible, IR).
Indented writing detector (ESDA [foster + freeman, UK])
This scientific device is used to display latent (invisible to the naked eye) handwritten indications on paper, which have been created by pressure, when this specific paper was used as a substrate of another piece of paper.
Thin-layer chromatography [TLC]
Thin-layer chromatography is a purely chemical method of differentiating ink pigments, which is used - after the VSC test - and only when we are allowed to do the relevant sampling, which causes a small "damage" to the examined document.
This examination requires the prior written consent of the competent body, and is always carried out under the condition that we will secure -through photographs- the existing indication (before and after sampling).
During the sampling, a sample of the graphic substrate without ink is always taken as a reference sample.
Photographic & digital equipment
Photographic documentation equipment, which ensures the qualitative photographic representation of the observed graphic elements, through scientific instruments (microscopes) or devices, both during the microscopic and the macroscopic examination.
Personal computers and peripherals are used for the qualitative storage and processing of photographs of the documents for their presentation and documentation.
